Bible Topic: Treatment of Animals

Bible shows that God cares for the animals and the way we treat them

God promised his people he would provide for their animals

Deuteronomy 11:15 "He will also provide grass in your field for your cattle, and you will eat and be satisfied."

Jesus stated that God provides food for the birds

Matthew 6:26 “Look at the birds of the sky, that they do not sow, nor reap, nor gather crops into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more important than they?”

God shows mercy to all creation.

Psalms 145:9 "The LORD is good to all, And His mercies are over all His works."

Bible says a righteous person shows mercy by having compassion on his own animals

Proverbs 12:10 "A righteous person has regard for the life of his animal, But even the compassion of the wicked is cruel."

Balaam was scolded by an angel for striking his donkey which led him to repent

Numbers 22:32-34 "Then the angel of the LORD said to him, “Why have you struck your donkey these three times? Behold, I have come out as an adversary, because your way was reckless and contrary to me. 33 “But the donkey saw me and turned away from me these three times. If she had not turned away from me, I certainly would have killed you just now, and let her live.” 34 So Balaam said to the angel of the LORD, “I have sinned, for I did not know that you were standing in the way against me. Now then, if it is displeasing to you, I will turn back.”

God commanded the Israelites if they saw their own enemy's donkey struggling to help it

Exodus 23:5 “If you see the donkey of one who hates you lying helpless under its load, you shall not leave it helpless for its owner; you must arrange the load with him.”

God required a person's cattle to take rest on the Sabbath

Exodus 20:10 "but the seventh day is a Sabbath of the LORD your God; on it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male slave or your female slave, or your cattle, or your resident who stays with you."

God wanted his people to take consideration on how an animal and its young were to be slaughtered

Leviticus 22:28 “But, whether it is an ox or a sheep, you shall not slaughter both it and its young in one day."

God prohibited cooking a baby goat in its mother’s milk. Bible doesn’t say why, but shows God considers animals

Exodus 23:19b "....“You are not to boil a young goat in the milk of its mother."

God expected a person to help an animal in distress

Deuteronomy 22:4 “You shall not see your countryman’s donkey or his ox fallen down on the road, and avoid them; you shall certainly help him raise them up."

God taught his people how to take consideration to mother birds when having to take an egg for food

Deuteronomy 22:6-7 “If you happen to come upon a bird’s nest along the way, in any tree or on the ground, with young ones or eggs in it, and the mother sitting on the young or on the eggs, you shall not take the mother with the young; 7 you shall certainly let the mother go, but the young you may take for yourself, in order that it may go well for you and that you may prolong your days."
