GOD is One

Echad (אֶחָד)

The Hebrew word for the number 1

Bible states God is One

Deuteronomy 6:4 (KJV) "Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one (אֶחָד) LORD:"

Argument: “Well echad (אֶחָד) doesn’t mean absolutely one but rather a “compound unity"

Verses taken out of context to support the argument

Cluster of Grapes

Numbers 13:23 (KJV) "And they came unto the brook of Eshcol, and cut down from thence a branch with one (אֶחָד) cluster of grapes, and they bare it between two upon a staff; and they brought of the pomegranates, and of the figs."

Day of Creation (They'll state that the verse insists on a fusion of things becoming one)

Genesis 1:5 (ASV) "And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, one (אֶחָד) day."

Two becoming one flesh

Genesis 2:24 (KJV) Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one (אֶחָד) flesh.

Scriptures say otherwise and show that echad (אֶחָד) operates as the English word for number one just as we saw in the verses taken out of context.

Examples in English:

1) I have one dinette set. 2) I have one penny.

Other examples in the Hebrew Text

One Witness

Deuteronomy 17:6 (KJV) "At the mouth of two witnesses, or three witnesses, shall he that is worthy of death be put to death; but at the mouth of one (אֶחָד) witness he shall not be put to death."

Deuteronomy 19:15 (KJV) "One (אֶחָד) witness shall not rise up against a man for any iniquity, or for any sin, in any sin that he sinneth: at the mouth of two witnesses, or at the mouth of three witnesses, shall the matter be established."

One Animal

Exodus 9:6 (KJV) "And the LORD did that thing on the morrow, and all the cattle of Egypt died: but of the cattle of the children of Israel died not one (אֶחָד)."

One Man

Genesis 42:11 (KJV) "We are all one (אֶחָד) man's sons; we are true men, thy servants are no spies.

Conclusion

Does this argument support the trinity doctrine?

Short answer is No. Echad (אֶחָד) is simply Hebrew for the number one (1). It operates just like the English word, for the number one (1). There’s no hidden meaning and isn’t a good argument to use for finding support for the trinity doctrine especially since Deuteronomy 6:4 states God is only one. As well as Jesus quoting the exact verse (Deut 6:4) in Mark 12:29.
